Francis Bacon wondered just how possible it was in a painting to “catch the mystery of appearance within the mystery of making”. Having spent much of my life living and working in East Anglia, in Suffolk until a few years ago and latterly back in Norfolk where I grew up, my work is increasingly concentrated upon the elusive yet distinct spirit of place. Through the process of drawing and memory the mind’s eye, or ”the eye’s mind”, is galvanised, alert to a particular landscape’s volatility, resonance and rhythms. How to make appearance come in? Through painting I aim to energise and make active the space in which the picture is hung.
